An Update from Mike Angell about Cristosal
An update from the Rev. Mike Angell: defending human rights and democracy with Cristosal
Dear Friends,
Earlier this month, I was elected to serve as the new president of Cristosal. I have been following the organization for a number of years, and have visited the region multiple times, including this fall when I accompanied a group of LGBTQ+ activists. Cristosal is an Anglican/Episcopal founded organization making a difference for human rights in some of the most violent countries in our hemisphere.
A report came out last week from detailing the growing crisis in El Salvador. Cristosal has dedicated human rights defenders on the ground protecting the most vulnerable. We are defending democracy where rights are fragile.
Between March 2022 and November 2022, Human Rights Watch and Cristosal interviewed more than 1,100 people from all 14 states in El Salvador in order to document human rights abuses. This report sheds light on the seriousness and pervasiveness of violations under the so-called “state of exception” and will have impact with the international community. You can read more and download the report here. The New York Times covered the release of the report as well, you can read that article here.
I’m really proud of the work Cristosal is doing and invite you to join me in supporting our organization. If you are making end of year donations, I encourage you to consider Cristosal. All the information you need to support us is here. Do not hesitate to reach out with questions.
With thanks
and Blessings for the Season,
The Rev. Mike Angell
Board President
Cristosal
